Setting Up Facebook Archiving

How We Access Your Data

With the way Facebook is structured, data from your Pages or personal timeline posts must be accessed through your main Facebook account associated with that data — and this is typically your personal Facebook account. This doesn't mean that only your personal posts are being collected — the default settings for the permissions that we request for your Facebook Platform Data will capture everything below in "What Gets Archived".

You can edit what Facebook gives us access to but this may affect our ability to collect certain data, so please read the below instructions carefully.

*Please note that a Facebook account that has Professional Mode turned on will NOT be able to archive personal posts. To turn off Professional Mode on your Facebook account, please follow the steps outlined in this article.

What Gets Archived

Personal Timeline posts

  • Post content
  • Post media (photos and videos)

Page posts

  • Post content
  • Post media (photos and videos)
  • Page description

Adding a Facebook Source

  1. Go to your Sources page.
  2. Click Add Account next to Facebook.
  3. Click Continue to be redirected to Facebook's login page.
  4. If you aren't already logged in to the Facebook account you'd like to archive, enter your Facebook login credentials.
  5. If you don't want your personal Facebook Timeline posts archived, or want to limit which Facebook Pages we archive, click "Edit access." Otherwise, click Continue.
  6. If you clicked "Edit access," you'll see a popup with a range of options. If you don't want your personal Facebook timeline posts archived, only deselect the "Timeline posts" option. If you deselect other options such as Photos, Videos, Emails, or Business management, this will cause issues with archiving.
  7. Depending on how your account is set up and what resources you have associated with it, you may also be given the option to choose what you allow us to archive of your connected Facebook resources (such as Pages or other resources). If desired, you must only deselect the options associated with the individual Pages or resources that you don't want archived — do not deselect broad/general permissions that aren't associated with one of your specific Pages or it will cause issues with archiving.
  8. Close the "Edit access" popup and Continue!

Your account is now connected! Remember that your account will sync and your data will be available in archives beginning the day after you add it as a source.

Editing What's Archived

If you made those choices in a hurry (don't worry, we've all been there), you can still edit what you'd like archived! This is done through Facebook directly:

  1. Log in to your Facebook account.
  2. On your account options navigate to Settings.
  3. Click into Business Integrations.
  4. Click "View and edit" next to the XY Archive integration.
  5. If you'd like to turn off personal Facebook timeline post archiving, deselect "Timeline posts" (only deselect the Timeline posts option — if you deselect other options such as Photos, Videos, Emails, or Business management, this will cause issues with archiving).
  6. Depending on how your account is set up and what resources you have associated with it, you may also have the option in this view to choose what you allow us to archive of your connected Facebook resources (such as Pages or other resources). If desired, you must only deselect the options associated with the individual Pages or resources that you don't want archived — do not deselect broad/general permissions that aren't associated with one of your specific Pages or it will cause issues with archiving.

However, some Facebook accounts may not see individual Pages listed in this view. In that case, you'll have to remove the app from your Facebook Business integrations and then once again step through the above directions for Adding a Facebook Source.
